LAVRIO

description: master plan for a mixed-use waterfront residential community

The proposal deals with the redevelopment of a 100-acre area on the Lavrio coastline, on the site of the abandoned Aigaion textile factory. The proposal is organized into amphitheater-like zones formed from the demolition debris of the facilities, which will be crushed and cleaned up on site. The deterioration of the building stock had progressed to such an extent that it prohibited their reuse, while in addition, harmful substances were found in a large percentage of them. The master plan combines two types of housing: The northern section includes high-density collective housing on continuous curved platforms with planted roofs that follow the established traffic axes. Above the 2-3 storey residential platforms, 4-storey towers are alternately placed to take advantage of the view. The southern section is occupied by low-density suburban-type housing with two-story villas located in an area of dense vegetation. The coastal front is shaped from south to north by a linear supermarket that serves the residents of the complex, the wider area of Lavrio, as well as the marina and tourist traffic. Adjacent to this is a multi-purpose building with an emphasis on sports activities, and at the northernmost end of the complex, in contact with the urban fabric and the historic center of Lavrio, is a hotel.
